Lawn Maintainence

Mowing

Mowing is a very important part of producing a good lawn. You should mow twice a week when lawn is actively growing (usually between April and September). The reason behind mowing twice a week is to prevent cutting too much grass in one go because this will put the grass plant under stress. This will also help to create a thicker and healthier swald. You should mow in different directions each time. You need to make sure the mower blade is sharp and in good order. Ideally your mower should have a rear roller. This will not only produce a nice striped lawn but, more importantly, will help your lawn stay level and firm. In drought conditions or extreme temperatures it may be necessary not to mow so often and leave the grass slightly longer. This will help to retain moisture in the grass. It is important to set the correct height for mowing. This is governed by the level of your lawn. Setting the mower too low could result in scalping - this must be avoided.

Fertilising

A spring feed will strengthen grass after the winter period. Apply a fertiliser around March time. A second feed is recommended in early summer (May/June). This will replace nutrients which have been lost while grass has been actively growing. September/October is the time to apply an autumn/winter fertiliser. The best time to apply this is after lawn regeneration work has been completed. In addition to this apply autumn/winter fertiliser in December (if weather conditions allow).
